Item Details
Description
Central Asia, Nepal, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful devotional painting known as a paubha of Lord Vishnu painted on a cotton textile panel. The ground is painted a dark blue, nearly black, hue which contrasts wonderfully with the colorful deity in the center. He stands upright on the yellow center or stamen of a lotus flower, wearing a flowing antariya type of garment. He has 4 arms and in the upper two he holds 2 attributes, including a conch and lotus, his lower arms form an abhaya mudra for no fear. The god is elaborately adorned with necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and a crown. All is painted in vibrant hues of green, red, blue, yellow, and white. To add to his splendor, radiating beams of light streaming from his sides like a halo. The textile panel is tightly woven and in very good condition and would be a beautiful piece to mount in a frame to display. Size: 21.75" W x 28.75" H (55.2 cm x 73 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hudson, New York, USA collection; ex-estate of Angela Jucker-Grunaue
