Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fabulous collection of 4 shells that are hand-drilled with multiple holes for suspension to use as pendants or pectorals. The first is a beige conch shell, polished to smooth and round the spiked ridges encircling the spire; of which the tip has been removed. This large opening on the tip is flanked by four piercings. The second is a ribbed scallop shell with two piercings near the hinge. Third is a white moon snail shell, rounded with a tight spire to one side. The surface is punctured by 19 perfectly circular drilled holes. The last is a slightly curved shard from a larger shell, with the edges and face polished smooth, with three suspension holes along the outer periphery. Size of scallop shell: 3" L x 3" W (7.6 cm x 7.6 cm); conch shell: 2.5" L x 1.75" W (6.4 cm x 4.4 cm)
