Item Details
Description
Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fabulous gilt brass tantric deity known as Mahakala standing upon a pedestal with a flaming arch surrounding him. He stands atop a prone figure of a man who represents a corpse, on the center of the beaded, lotus pedestal. The deity's face is frightening, with bared teeth, and flared nostrils under glaring eyes. Mahakala is elaborately adorned, dressed in a tiger skin, wearing a skull headdress, earrings, necklaces, snake around his waist, and other skull themed attire. In this depiction he has two arms and holds a cult knife and a skull bowl filled with what is perhaps blood. The framing arch is a flame aureole that is cast separately from the base and Mahakala. The lotus base is also worked separately from the demon, and all three pieces fit together to create this elaborate statue. Mahakala is the tantric figure known as the "Great Black One" or "Great Time." Time is believed to be the destroyer of all things and is therefore symbolically associated with death. Size: 7.75" L x 11.5" H (19.7 cm x 29.2 cm)
