Item Details
Description
Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran and Turkey, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A lovely gathering of 4 cast-bronze amulets of minimalist and slightly abstract zoomorphic forms. First is a slender horse laying recumbent atop an integral plinth with its head raised and ears perked upwards. Second is a petite zebu bull standing atop 4 nubbin legs while presenting its humped back and protruding horns. Third is an abstract avian figure with a grooved back, a perforation just beneath the neck, and a raised head with a conical beak. The largest piece is an abstract standing horse applique with a serpentine tail, a raised head with a backswept ear, and perhaps a partial rider with bent legs on the back. All are covered in nice layers of brown and green patina. Size of largest (standing horse): 3.1" W x 1.625" H (7.9 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: private Corpus Christi, Texas, USA estate collection, acquired 1960s to 1970s

#165285
Condition
Largest horse has losses to ear, rider, and bottoms of both legs as shown; remaining 3 pieces are intact and very good. Avian piece is adhered to wooden display stand and cannot be removed. All pieces have minor abrasions and surface wear, with softening to some finer details, and very light encrustations. Nice patina throughout, and great retention of zoomorphic forms.
