Item Details
Description
Ancient Greece, Archaic, ca. 650 to 480 BCE. A mold-made terracotta protome presenting a female bust with the hood of her himation drawn up and over her head, a crimped fringe of bangs elegantly framing her face and ears, and delicate features such as open, almond-shaped, lidded eyes, a relatively naturalistic nose, nicely contoured cheeks, a rounded chin, and that signature Archaic smile. Although the exact significance of this smile is unknown, scholars suggest that the ancient Greeks associated it with good health and well being. The bust is further delineated with a long neck. A wonderful example from this early period. Size: 3.75" W x 6.375" H (9.5 cm x 16.2 cm); 8.25" H (21 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, before 2010
