Item Details
Description
(1881 - 1945) Nazi Secretary of State, instrumental in the development and formulation of the Law on the Protection of German Blood and German Honor ('Nuremberg Laws'). These laws incorporated anti-Semitism as a form of scientific racism, and resulted in large-scale officially sanctioned persecution of Jews. Excellent content T.L.S. as Senior State Secretary of the Interior, 1p. 4to., Berlin, June 14, 1938, thanking German diplomat HERBERT VON WOLFF (1886-1967) for his contributions on the German-Czechoslovak border treaty. In large part: 'The Reich Minister for Foreign Affairs has informed me that you have supported the representative of the Foreign Office in the most effective way...in the often difficult negotiations on the conclusion of a German-Czechoslovak border treaty. He asked me to express his gratitude...I use this occasion to recognize on my part that, thanks to your reliable cooperation in the Reich Border Committee, especially in the intergovernmental negotiations, the work has been significantly promoted and has been successfully completed.' Paper clip stain, else fine. The increasing aggressiveness of Hitler, and the annexation of Austria, caused extreme tensions on the German-Czechoslovak border in 1936, prompting the Czech military to build extensive fortifications to defend the troubled region, which only worsened tensions. The mentioned 'treaty' certainly references the so-called 'Karlsbader Programm', an eight-point series of demands by Sudeten Germans calling for complete equality between them and the Czech people, months before Chamberlain's disastrous meeting with Hitler. The Czech government accepted these claims in June 1938, shortly after this letter was sent. Von Wolff, likely in exchange for his service on the border, later served as Ministerialrat in the Reich Ministry of the Interior under Pfundtner.
