Item Details
Description
DAHL (Hans, Norwegian artist) and Kaiser Wilhelm II interest. The 1931 University Boat Race, archive compiled by George Gray of Queens' College, who rowed at no. 4 for the victorious Cambridge crew. Comprising a large album with 44 pages of extensive documentation (press cuttings, photos clipped from newspapers, etc) and a number of large, loosely inserted official photographs from the London News Agency Photos Ltd showing the crew, a congratulatory postcard sent to George Gray by fellow Cambridge students in Germany who had listened to the race on the radio, and other ephemera. In 1939 George Gray married Gladys Elsie Wiese, the granddaughter of the renowned Norwegian artist Hans Dahl. Also included are further Hans Dahl items: 4 page manuscript letter signed, in Norwegian, dated 22 August 1890 [written 3 years before he built his well-known summer resort, Balestrand]. Together with a large and historically important photograph album with many fine views of Hans Dahl and family at his "dragon house" at Strandheim, Balestrand in Norway, and elsewhere, together with many showing Dahl and his friend and patron, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, who visited Norway in the imperial yacht S.M.Y. Hohenzollern over many summers before the First World War. Many images show social life on board the royal yacht, circa 1910. The kaiser is shown at Dahl's house and garden. In all there are 13 images of Kaiser Wilhelm, part of a large group of 47 documenting his visit. Many individuals are named, including German naval and other officers. The album may have been compiled by Eline Jacobena Wiese (née Dahl), who was the married daughter of Hans Dahl. An inscription at the front reads "Evelyn Wiese, age 14". Evelyn, who was brought up partly in England, was Dahl's granddaughter; she may well have added the later family photos to the album.
