1830s Philadelphia Receipt Ledger with Related Documents

A small bound ledger, measuring 3.25" x 6", Philadelphia, dated 1832-1837. 44pp total, with 28pp used at the front and 16pp used at the back. The ledger includes records for household and estate expenses. Receipts include:

The volume has bound marble paper-covered boards with a leather spine. Approximately 60 signed receipts within, with some duplication of names. The ledger is accompanied by related documents, with flattened folds and varying degrees of toning, foxing, soiling, and edge chipping. The covers of the ledger are scuffed and worn. Rubbing to the spine. Three blank pages have been torn. Light toning and foxing to internal pages, with overall sound binding.

Allen Cuthbert (1804-1884), a wholesale grocer, was the son of Anthony Cuthbert (1751-1832), an early Philadelphia shipbuilder. Allen became an estate administrator after his father's death.
