Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu / Inca cultures, ca. 1100 to 1400 CE. A hand built blackware vessel molded in the form of two reed boats, caballito de totora, with two human figures. The vessel sits on a pedestal foot and the cone shaped boats are joined together in the center to form the body. A man kneels in front with a paddle raised, his legs straddle both the reed boats and a handle arches from his head to a tall spout on the other end. A smaller figure kneels hugging the back of the spout. The surface is a lustrous black with silvery areas. A fascinating look at how these Andean cultures traveled on water!
