Warhol started his career as a commercial designer. In the mid 1950's the young artist designed a series of manila folders as promotional gifts for his patron Vanity Fair magazine. A printed text box on the verso side of the folder states:

'This Vanity Fair Butterly folder was designed for your desk by Andy Warhol, whose paintings are exhibited in many leading museums and contemporary galleries. (Or if you like, the back and front were planned so you can frame them separately to make a delightful pair of prints for your wall.) HAPPY BUTTERFLY DAYS'

Toning present along far edges of manila folder, all four edges, small crease at top right corner, toning in tab of folder, recto. Small minor skinned area in lower right corner, recto. Pressure mark in lower left margin, verso side has text as stated in footnote on lot.
