Description
This lot consists of an unframed oil painting on canvas, done in the avant-garde style of Whanki Kim, also known as Kim Whanki or Kim Hwan-gi (Korean, 1913-1974). Image depicts a horizontal branch of cherry blossoms intersecting a curious rectangular collage of shape, line, and color. Handwritten inscription at lower left corner reads, "Whanki". Unframed dimensions approximately 19.5" x 11".
Reverse side of canvas features a number of black ink stamps, a paper label, and a handwritten inscription.
Whanki Kim (Korean, 1913-1974) was an artist known for his softly-colored abstractions. Kim studied fine arts at Nihon University, Tokyo, and then returned to Korea in 1937. Here, he established himself as a true pioneer of abstract painting in his native country, and his career eventually took him to metropolises like Paris (in the fifties) and New York (in the sixties). Living abroad deepened Kim's sense of national pride, and encouraged him to further celebrate the uniquely Korean qualities of his work. Whanki Kim died on July 25, 1974 in New York, NY.
