Description
This lot consists of a hand painted gouache illustration on board, done in the style of the elusive street artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988). The figure at the center of this stark composition is striking in its simplicity. "SAMO (R)" is painted at bottom. A testament to the vibrancy and raw talent associated with Jean-Michel Basquiat. This piece is bold, strong and expressive, a highlight to any modern art collection. Overall framed piece measures approximately 17.25" x 13".
Reverse side of piece features an affixed paper label which reads as follows:
"Tony Shafrazi Gallery. #0834. Jean Michel Basquiat. Untitled, 1980. Gouache on board. 13.5 x 7.5 inches. 163 Mercer Street New York 10012 212 925 8732."
A handwritten graphite inscription may be noted at center.
At bottom left, an illegible ink stamp has been filled in with handwritten graphite notes. The inscriptions read:
"Untitled. 1980. Gouache. 11 1/2 x 7 1/2. Jean Michel Basquiat."
Basquiat used social commentary in his paintings as a tool for introspection and for identifying with his experiences in the black community of his time, as well as attacks on power structures and systems of racism. Basquiat's visual poetics were acutely political and direct in their criticism of colonialism and support for class struggle. He died of a heroin overdose at his art studio at the age of 27. On May 18, 2017, at a Sotheby's auction, a 1982 painting by Basquiat depicting a black skull with red and black rivulets (Untitled) set a new record high for any American artist at auction, selling for $110.5 million. Basquiat's art has inspired many in the hip hop music community such as Jay Z.
