This lot consists of a gouache illustration on paper, done in the realist style of Edward Hopper (American, 1882-1967). Hand inscription at bottom left reads, "E. Hopper". Image depicts a young woman standing behind a dramatically lit diner counter, scrawling something on a small notepad. She wears an apron and is presumably a night-shift waitress. This haunting modern art image is done in the realist style for which Hopper is so well known. Unframed piece measures approximately 11.25" x 8".

Reverse side features a red ink stamp and several handwritten graphite inscriptions.

Hopper, used to water views from childhood, was raised in a home on the Hudson River. He showed early artistic talent. Following two years of illustration work at the turn of the 20th century, Hopper became a student at the New York School of Art under William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. Hopper credited the latter as being his most influential teacher. In his urban and rural studies, Edward Hopper's spare and finely calculated compositions reflected his personal vision of modern American life and have become instantly identifiable to art lovers everywhere.
