This lot consists of a gouache illustration on paper, done in the realist style of Edward Hopper (American, 1882-1967). Hand inscription at bottom right corner reads, "E. Hopper". Image depicts a couple sitting on a porch, their faces washed in sunlight as they gaze out. They appear to be completely absorbed, unaware of the gaze fixed upon them. This study is done in the realist style for which Hopper is so well known. Unframed piece measures approximately 11.25" x 8".

Reverse side features two stamps. One reads, "Chas. Enders, Jr. Dealer in American & Foreign Coins. 51 Sheriff Street, New York." The second stamp says "New York" and several other markings, which are partial.

Hopper, used to water views from childhood, was raised in a home on the Hudson River. He showed early artistic talent. Following two years of illustration work at the turn of the 20th century, Hopper became a student at the New York School of Art under William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. Hopper credited the latter as being his most influential teacher. In his urban and rural studies, Edward Hopper's spare and finely calculated compositions reflected his personal vision of modern American life and have become instantly identifiable to art lovers everywhere.
