This lot consists of a framed oil painting on canvas, rendered in the modern style of Fauvist painter Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954). "Henri Matisse" is inscribed at lower right corner. Image depicts an interior still life scene. A small blue table strikes a bold contrast against a red tile floor. Small oranges are strewn across its surface, below the spray of color given off by a vase of flowers. This stunningly elegant piece is a perfect example of the understated style for which Matisse was so well known. Overall framed dimensions approximately 23.5" x 26.5".

Henri Matisse (French, 1869 - 1954) was an artist known for both his fluid use of colour and his original draughtsmanship. He was an illustrator, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century.
