Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Cavernas, Paracas culture, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A lovely textile panel fragment composed of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of salmon, wheat, burgundy, emerald, and cobalt. The panel displays two identical figures, perhaps suggestive of a decapitator deity, each holding a trophy head in one hand and a ceremonial tumi in the other. Each figure is flanked by a pair of abstract zoomorphic figures, and the deities' highly-abstract heads are surrounded by a radiating corona. Mounted on a fabric-lined wooden frame. Size (textile): 3.95" W x 7.95" H (10 cm x 20.2 cm); size (frame): 7" W x 10.9" H (17.8 cm x 27.7 cm).
