Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Proto-Nazca, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A remarkably large muneca fringe mantle woven from natural camelid (alpaca or llama) wool yarns by the proto-Nazca - comprised of 37 muneca (Spanish for doll) figures, each with long sweeping brown hair and stylized bodies showing abstract step motifs of varying hues including teal, azure blue, olive green, gold, sienna brown, creamy beige, chocolate brown, and russet red. Look closely and you will see that the munecas are all holding their hands upwards in what appears to be an orant pose! Mantle mounted on black cotton fabric.
