Description
"The Eighteenth-Century Houses of Williamsburg: A Study of Architecture and Building in the Colonial Capital of Virginia" by Marcus Whiffen, With 132 illustrations, published by Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia; First Edition, stated Second Printing, 1960. Original dust jacket with un-clipped price on the front flap is present.
"Much of the charm and elegance that characterized eighteenth-century America may be seen today in the beautiful old houses of Williamsburg, Virginia. All are the work of craftsmen with a sense of proportion, an eye for beauty, and a passion for detail. Just as these houses were built -- brick upon brick, board upon board -- the noted architectural historian Marcus Whiffen has created a meticulously detailed study of the domestic architecture of Virginia's colonial capital."
Part I of this comprehensive study surveys the materials used in the construction of the houses, the training and lives of the master builders and craftsmen, the tools and books these craftsmen used, and the factors that influenced the design of these eighteenth-century homes and buildings.
Part II is a pictorial survey of thirty-two of the eighty-three original houses in Colonial Williamsburg's restored area -- among them the Peyton Randolph House, home of the speaker of the House of Burgesses and one of the leading statesmen in colonial America; the St. George Tucker House; the Brush-Everard House; the Wythe House, home of George Wythe, Thomas Jefferson's law tutor; the Carter-Saunders House; the Palmer House; the Charlton House; the Powell-Waller House -- all houses with a historical significance and an appeal that remains undiminished with the years. Mr. Whiffen completes his fascinating presentation with a discussion of the other eighteenth-century houses still in use today outside of the restored area.
