Italian School XVII century."David with the Head of Goliath".Oil on canvas.Signed in anagram.Measures: 49 x 37 cm.We are in front of a piece of the circle of Giovanni Domenico Cerrini (Cavaliere Perugino), Italian painter. His first education, according to the biographer Pascoli, took place next to the local painter Giovanni Antonio Scaramuccia. Around 1635 he moved to Rome, where he developed most of his career, although he also traveled to Naples and Florence. In the latter city he was working in 1656 in the service of the Medici. His art leaned towards the classicism of artists such as Reni and Domenichino and his figures, which denote the influence of ancient statuary, are within the orbit of Bolognese classicism. We can consider this piece to be a reproduction of the painter's painting preserved in the Galleria Spada in Rome. It has a period frame in carved and gilded wood.As for the iconography, the theme of David has been a recurring theme in Christian iconography. According to the biblical chronicles, he was one of the great Jewish kings, not only because of his famous episode with Goliath (episode that we observe in this work) but also because he was the father of another great king of the people of Israel, Solomon.The myth collected in this work tells us that David was anointed by this prophet as the new king of Israel. In addition to being a shepherd, David could play the harp. So he went to serve King Saul, who at that time was fighting against the Philistines. There he confronted the giant Goliath, whom he killed with a stone he threw with his sling. The stone hit him in the forehead and Goliath fell to the ground. With the sword that the giant carried, David cut off his head.
