Description
ITALIAN SCHOOL, A PAINTING, "A Lady with Children holding Toys," 19TH CENTURY, oil on canvas, signed L/R indistinctly. 32" x 28" Note: The mother figure wears a black lace head scarf and looks to her left, her eyes locking with the older boy child. Her collar is half ruffled and a black lace shawl covers her shoulders. She wears an indigo shade blue-grey maternity or nursing coat over a matched fabric and brown skirt. She holds a sleeping child who clutches a soldier toy doll, gesturing over her shoulder to purple morning glories and sunrise at her back. The older child holds drumsticks and a drum, he wears britches and embraces his mother with childlike excitability. Her jewelry is subdued and her modesty accentuated. The present painting is an excellent example of the idealization of a loving mother and maternal ideal in 19th-century art. Provenance: Private Collection, Pearland, Texas
