Description
Good+/noDJ. Cloth soil, light edgewear, random foxing, pencil owner's signature, otherwise light wear. Solid hardcover. Somewhat convoluted story of Elizabeth Clifford Lindsay, a young Catholic girl born in Philadelphia to Colonel William Lindsay and his wife. George and Martha Washington resided nearby, and were known to her. Adopted by her wealthy aunt, to give her financial advantages her parents could not, she was disowned when she married the rich Creole planter, Monsieur de Savoie. After her relocation to Haiti, her life was shattered by the slave revolution, losing her husband and property, and endured captivity and the threat of execution. Eventually returning to Philadelphia, she discovered her aunt and parents had died during the yellow fever epidemic of 1798, and she was penniless. The story ends with her marriage to another French exile from Haiti, John Vernou, which marriage produced the family that cherished her account. There are some dating discrepancies in this account of Elizabeth Clifford Lindsay's life, but overall it appear authentic, rather than literary fiction. An interesting and uncommon memoir.
