Description
[Political Science] Baruch, Spinoza. Tractatus theologico-politicus. Hamburgi: Apud Henricum Künraht, 1670 [ Amsterdam: Jan Rieuwertsz, after 1677]. 4to. [12], 233, [3] pp. Modern vellum, title in ink to spine.
“Spinoza's thought, a fusion of Cartesian rationalism and the Hebraic tradition in which he grew up, is a solitary but crystal-clear exposition of the theory of natural right. He defends with eloquence the liberty of thought and speech in speculative matters, and the Tractatuscontains the first clear statement of the independence of each other of philosophy and religion ... ”(Printing and the Mind of Man). This copy constitutes the fifth printing of the treaty, made by the publisher of the original after the Dutch authorities had banned, in July 1674, the publication of new editions. It was obviously backdated in an attempt to circumvent censorship. Almost identical to the original edition and its other reprints in-4, this one differs in that it does not include an errata, which the cul-de-Lampe engraved at the end of the preface has been amended and that p. 192 is encrypted by mistake 92. The text is however appreciably more correct; indeed, remarks Bamberger, “its proofreader, more conversant with Latin than his predecessors, corrected many typographical errors that had crept into the earlier quartos. Bamberger: T.5 - Graesse, VI / 1, 469, PMM 153.
Condition Very good +. Minor toning and scattered foxing.
