This is a two sided drawing by Ohio artist Lewis Smith (1907 - 1998). One side has a woman and a heart, the other side has several sketches including a woman holding a sign that says "See Alliance First"(Alliance is where he lived). It is one of a series he did in ballpoint ink on 9" by 12" sketch paper. The paper is faintly yellowed, and has a pinhole on one side. Lewis preferred to use recycled and imperfect materials in his art - it reflected the value he saw in everyday objects that others discarded.

Lewis was a reclusive outsider artist. He lived most of his life in the woods of Ohio, alone after the death of his mother. He passed away in 1998. His drawing, writing, and painting on recycled paper, cardboard, and the walls of his house and buildings reflects his preoccupation with muscular women boxers and wrestlers, trains, time, and money. Crackers were a big part of his diet, and he then recycled the boxes into art. His work is included in museums and folk art art collections throughout the world. They have been in several major folk and outsider art shows. His pieces are prized as Art Brut in Europe.
