Description
Lewis Smith, who was a reclusive, eccentric artist. He lived most of his life in the woods of Ohio, alone after the death of his mother. Lewis Smith passed away in 1998. His work is included in museums and folk art collections throughout the world. They have been in several major folk and outsider art shows. His pieces are prized as Art Brut in Europe. Read his bio and see photos of him in one of the pictures here.
His drawing, writing, and painting on recycled paper, cardboard, and the walls of his house and buildings reflects his preoccupation with muscular women boxers and wrestlers, trains, time, and money. The two themes of most of his work are trains (his father worked for a railroad) and lady wrestlers.
He drew and wrote, sometimes combining the two. His art includes pieces on Brown paper bags, white paper, cardboard, cracker boxes, sketches, and themes of Muscle women, diners, money, alleys, animals, time, and writings. Crackers were a big part of his diet, and he then recycled the boxes into art.
