Alexandra Exter (née Grigorovich) was born in Belestock, near Kiev, in 1882 and studied at the Kiev Art School, graduating in 1906. She first visited Paris in 1908, attending classes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. She married that year and exhibited for the first time at the exhibition Sovremennye techenia (New Trends) in St. Petersburg, under her married name, Exter. She travelled regularly and visited Paris often until World War I, becoming familiar with the art movements prevalant at the time, including Cubism and Futurism. Her style was, thus, a fusion of Russian and Western avant-garde styles. Exter exhibited regularly, both at home and abroad, contributing to Bubnovyi valet (Jack of Diamonds) exhibitions held in Moscow between 1910 and 1917 and to the Salon des Indépendants in Paris between 1912 and 1914. Exter returned to Moscow at the start of the First World War and took part in the important exhibitions Tramvai V. Pervaia futuristicheskaia vystavka kartin (Tramway V: First Futurist Exhibition of Paintings) in Petrograd in 1915, and Magazin (The Store) in 1916. She began teaching in her own studio, first in Odessa in 1917 and then in Kiev from 1918 to 1921. She was also a successful stage designer, most recognized for her work for Alexander Tairov's Kamerny Theatre in Moscow from 1916 to 1921. She emigrated to Paris in 1924 and remained in France until her death in poverty in 1949.
