Description
**First Time At Auction**
After Charles Bird King (American, 1785-1862). "Not-Chi-Mi-Ne, An Ioway Chief" - hand-colored lithograph, ca. 19th century, A bust-length portrait of Not-Chi-Mi-Ne, facing right and highly decorated with earrings and a portrait medallion around his neck, originally printed in Thomas McKenney & James Hall "History of the Indian Tribes of North America." Thomas McKenney greatly admired the indigenous peoples of the Americas and worked to preserve their culture and legacy via a gallery of paintings commissioned by numerous artists. Sadly, those original paintings were destroyed by a fire. Given this, lithographs rendered after those paintings, like this example, are the only surviving records of those compositions. Size of print (what is visible in framing): 8.25" L x 5.625" W (21 cm x 14.3 cm) Size of frame: 16.875" L x 14.25" W (42.9 cm x 36.2 cm)
Size of sheet difficult to discern since partially covered by matte, but the print may be the 7" x 10.75" version that appeared in the 1870 octavo edition of McKenney & Hall's "History of the Indian Tribes of North America".
Provenance: ex Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
