**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial Period, Commodus, ca. 177 to 192 CE, struck 192, Rome mint. Obverse: L AEL AVREL COMM ANT P FEL, head laureate right. Reverse: HERC VL ROMANO AVG S C, Commodus as Hercules standing left, laying right hand on trophy and holding club and lion skin in left. The title, "The Roman Hercules" recorded on the reverse of this coin was voted to Commodus by the Senate and the historian Dio Cassius, who entered the Senate under Commodus, reports that Commodus also had the lion skin and club of Hercules before him in procession. AE sestertius. Size: 1.2" W (3 cm); 24.58 grams
