Description
[HOFFMAN, Charles F.]. A Winter in the West. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1835. 2 volumes, 12mo. Publisher's green cloth, covers bordered in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Portsmouth Circulating Library (bookplate).
First edition.
Charles Fenno Hoffman's first book about his travels through Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri. He returned from the West via Kentucky, the Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, and finally arrived in Charlottesville, Virginia. His comments focus predominately on the scenery and his experiences with the local populations of both settlers and Native Americans. The numerous incidents of personal intercourse with Indians of various western tribes, the interesting details which the author's ardent curiosity regarding them drew from persons familiar with their life and habits, and the voluminous notes appended to these volumes, extracted from works not easily accessible, entitle them to a high rank in aboriginal literature (Field). .
Howes H568; Sabin 32389; Clark II:55. Field 706; Graff 1918; BAL 8521.
