Vintage MCM Wassily Chair, crafted from natural canvas. Tubular chrome frame. Measures approx 28.57 inches H, 31 inches W, 28.75 inches deep. Inspired by the frame of a bicycle, influenced by the constructivist theories of the De Stijl movement. Wear is consistent with age and use, evident surface wear, staining present. De Stijl, Dutch for "The Style", also known as Neoplasticism, was a Dutch art movement founded in 1917 in Leiden. De Stijl consisted of artists and architects. The term De Stijl is used to refer to a body of work from 1917 to 1931 founded in the Netherlands. Proponents of De Stijl advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and colour; they simplified visual compositions to vertical and horizontal, using only black, white and primary colors. The Wassily Chair, also known as the Model B3 chair, was originally designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925–1926 while he was the head of the cabinet-making workshop at the Bauhaus, in Dessau, Germany.
