Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A beautiful flask that is free-blown from translucent glass of soft yellow-green hues. The vessel presents with a broad piriform body bearing a dramatic central carination, a sloped shoulder, a gently corseted neck that flares slightly upwards until terminating at a rolled rim. The base of the flask rests upon an applied ring foot of blue-green glass that surrounds a rough pontil scar in the center. Areas of brilliant, rainbow-hued iridescence have formed across this delicate example of Roman utilitarian artistry! Size: 4" W x 4.8" H (10.2 cm x 12.2 cm)

Minor micro-bubbling within glass matrix, with light encrustations mostly within interior, and some small abrasions, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Light earthen deposits throughout, and great rainbow iridescence in scattered areas.
