Description:
4 pp., in ink, on 4-page folding stampless cover, addressed on the 4th page to W.D.M. Howard in San Francisco, sent via the S.S. Falcon. 25x20 cm (9¾x8").
Interesting pair of letters. with early mention of gold shipments from California. The first is a copy of a letter originally written and sent on Mar. 1, 1849 (seemingly in a secretarial hand with genuine signature), the second in Reed's hand written a month and a half later. Apparently the copy was sent in fear that the original had not made it through. The letters refer mostly to the collection of debts, which task Mr. Howard was assigned, and mentions debt owed by the U.S. government following the American conquest. Among selected passages: "...I have seen certificates of Govt. debts approved by Major Gillespie & others by Col. Fremont brought home by Capt. Phelps if all you hold are in as good shape as these, and one of them for $1000 for detention of the Vandalia, there can be no trouble in enforcing payment from our govt... I have the pleasure to acknowledge yours of Sept. 11th... advising shipment of gold dust per Lexington... Now that you will have the assistance of your brother I hope you may be able to devote more attention to the collection of our old debts & forward to us very soon... Please send also what evidence you have of the debt owed us from the Mexican Government..." A revealing missive, shedding light on business and financial matters in the early gold rush, and the carryover from the forced acquisition of California. And also, notably, the early shipment of gold from California to the eastern financial centers.
