United States, Connecticut, World War I era, ca. 1914 to 1918 CE. A metal mortar shell casing transformed into a work of art or memorial piece. The exterior features a stippled and textured surface depicting a woman holding onto the arms of a large crucifix. The words "SIMPLY TO THY CROSS I CLING," a verse from the Christian hymn "Rock of Ages," is boldly embossed on the surface. This specific verse and supplementary image were a popular motif, made popular in the 19th century by renewals in Christian faith across the United States, and continued into the early 20th century. The shell is marked on the base "AMLOT 75 M/MG LOT 1270-48 SCOVILL." Soldiers created remarkable works during the lulls from the front lines to be kept as mementos, and this one is clearly a declaration of Christian faith during some of the darkest times in history.
