Description
JOHN BROWN WALKER (PENNSYLVANIA / OHIO, 1815-1908) FOLK ART CUT-WORK / SCHERENSCHNITTE, intricate cut-work in white, blue, red, and embossed gold-toned layered paper on a black background, center featuring "FORGET / ME NOT." with ink detailing above an open hand holding a parallelogram cartouche with an inked inscription that reads, "Presented to Mrs. M. E. Angel. / Though years on speedy pinions roll, / and I in distant places be, / Let Memory than thy thogts [sic] control, / to sometimes think of me," and signed "Your Wellwisher / J.B. Walker," all surrounded by floral and scrolling foliate motifs. Housed under glass in a period walnut frame. Together with the catalogue for "Your Wellwisher, J.B. Walker: A Midwestern Paper Cut-Out Artist" exhibition. Museum at Michigan State University, 1979. Two pieces total. Fourth quarter 19th century. 9 1/2" x 11 1/2" sight, 13 1/2" x 15 1/2" OA.
Very good overall visual condition with light toning and scattered light to moderate spots/stains. Frame with wear and a sizable scratch to glass along top edge. Not examined out of frame.

Catalogue Note: The present scherenschnitte was presented to Margaret E. Angel of New Philadelphia, Ohio. Another example by Walker, made for Margaret's son Jesse (1880-1908) was sold at Pook & Pook, Inc., October 12, 2010, lot 948.
