Description
Thai Carved Wood Phallic Palad-khik Votive. Around the 1950s phallic amulets called palad-khik in Thailand began to morph from simple to more complex, sometimes taking animal forms with multiple phalluses that were believed to bring prosperity and good fortune. These standing carved wood pieces, as opposed to single phalluses that might have been worn on the neck or hip, would have been placed on altars or donated to roadside shrines in thanks for wishes fulfilled. Later the shrine donations would have been auctioned off and the funds donated to charity. Reference: Chinalai, "The Facts About Palad-khik — True and Phallus", San Francisco Tribal & Textile Arts Show Catalog, February 2004. Size: 6.25'' x 10'' x 5.5'' (16 x 25 x 14 cm).
