Raised and Padded, Beadwork Picture
English c.1660
This rare and charming beadwork picture depicts the Queen of Sheba (now the country of Yemen) visiting King Solomon, in Jerusalem circa 900 BCE. The black queen known for her beauty, wit, and wisdom traveled several years to meet King Solomon and test his famed wisdom with hard philosophical questions and riddles.
Note 1: The Queen and her attendants are depicted as Caucasian women in this 17th century English picture.
Note 2: 17th century "Raised and padded needlework" is often incorrectly referred to as "stumpwork" which is really an early 20th-century term incorrectly used to describe late 19th century "Raised and padded needlework".
Glass beads, mica, silk and metallic threads on silk; 10 3/4 x 13 1/2" framed.
Condition: There is some deterioration of the background silk fabric.
