Description

Richard Nixon Typed Letter Signed, Thanks for "wise counsel..."

1p, measuring 7.25" x 10.5", New York, dated March 27, 1967. Addressed to Hon. Llewellyn E. "Tommy" Thompson and signed "Dick Nixon". A thank you letter typed on Nixon's personal letterhead, reading in part:

"I am again in your debt for your wise counsel and gracious hospitality on my visit to Moscow. Your staff could not have been more helpful and I particularly wanted to tell you how greatly impressed I was by Walter Smith who handled my schedule, including the trip to Central Asia with incomparable poise and efficiency…" With flattened mail folds and minor corner creasing. A few pencil notations at the top right corner. Boldly signed by Nixon.

Llewellyn E. Thompson Jr. (1904-1972) served as U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1957 to 1962 and again from 1967 to 1969. He was a key advisor to President Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis and oversaw numerous significant events during the Cold War. Nixon had traveled to Eastern Europe in order to boost his credibility with foreign diplomacy in the lead-up to his 1968 presidential campaign.
