Description
Herbert Hoover TLS "in the midst of difficult labors...", During the Great Depression
1p of a bifolium, measuring 7" x 9", Washington, D.C., dated March 5, 1932. Addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Milbank. A typed letter signed "Herbert Hoover" on White House stationery. A short thank you letter acknowledging Milbank's "kind expressions of good will…" "in the midst of difficult labors…" With a flattened mail fold and light toning. Boldly signed. The letter is accompanied by the original envelope, postmarked March 7th. With usual wear and soiling, torn along the right edge. Mounting residue on verso of the envelope. Letters signed by Hoover on White House stationery are relatively scarce and would be an excellent addition to any collection!
Hoover was indeed in the midst of difficult times, as the stock market crashed just six months after Hoover took office. The Great Depression became the central issue of his presidency, and he saw a worldwide market value fall of 15% and a rise in unemployment of 23%.
