Description
Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant, Two Volume Set
Charles L. Webster & Company, New York, 1885, 1886. Bound in three-quarter black pebbled leather over smooth brown cloth with beautiful gilt decorations on the front boards and the spines; marbled textblocks, endpapers, and pastedowns. Each volume illustrated by a frontispiece, numerous maps, and additional illustrations. The fold-out map and facsimile of the terms of Lee's surrender in volume two are in nice condition, with only several intact tears to the terms of Lee's surrender along the lower portion of the sheet, passing through some text. However the tears are intact and not affecting the legibility. The facsimile in Volume One of General Buckner's dispatch is present but has split along a fold line. Volume one has sunning to the spine which has turned the leather to a light brown color. Both volumes are slightly worn and rubbed as typically found. The half title page of volume one has a small 1/2" corner piece missing. The pages are otherwise quite clean throughout, the original tissue guards are present, and the binding are still firm.
Grant completed his memoirs shortly before his death in 1885. The books were published and edited by Mark Twain and his nephew Charles Webster (co-owners of Charles L. Webster & Company), and these were the first two volumes in the "Shoulder Strap" series. Grant's memoirs are two of the most important books of the Civil War. A Very Good set .
