MALEVICH, CIRCA 1990s, each teapot and cream pitcher with a flat square form finial handle on a circular lid, sitting on a flat-topped bowed cylindrical body flanked by a quarter round angled spout with half serpentine flange, opposite a shaped disc form handle; the sugar bowls with matching lids on bowed cylindrical bodies with flat breakfront block and rectangle fronts flanked by inverted asymmetrical angle and semi-circular handles, each unmarked and comprising two lidded teapots, height: 4 1/4", width: 8 1/4", depth: 4 1/2"; two lidded sugar bowls, height: 3 5/8", width: 5 1/2", depth: 4"; two lidded cream pitchers, height: 5 7/8", width: 5 1/4", depth: 2 3/4". Note: Kazimir Severinovich Malevich (Ukrainian/Russian 1879-1935), one of the leading avant guard artist in the decade before the Bolshevik coup d' ?tat of October 1917 and afterwards until the onslaught of Joseph Stalin's reactionary dictatorship during the 1930s. His simplistic minimalist paintings such as "Black Square" of 1915, and "White on White" of 1918 were/are considered a radical abstract style for the period which influenced his contemporaries as well as artists long after his death such as Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Anne Truitt, and many others. The tea sets offered here stylistically follow a set he designed after seizing control of the State Porcelain Manufactory (formerly the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory) with other Suprematists artist in 1923 which radically changed the focus of the factory's old imperial style to reflect those of the new Bolshevik revolution. Provenance: From the Estate of Joseph Gregg, San Antonio, Texas.
