Description
Edo period (1603-1868) Kano School Byobu screen, likely late 18th century. The screen panels depict a court setting among the flowering trees and evergreens with musicians, court ladies, samurai with a pheasant, and other figures. Paintings are mounted and trimmed with silk depicting phoenix and stylized flames. Rear is stenciled paper in geometric designs with a flower center. Outside corners are finished with engraved copper L brackets.
Dimensions are: Panels: 28 1/2 inches tall X 14 7/8 inches wide; 72.39 cm tall X 37.78 cm wide. Overall: 28 1/2 inches tall X 87 1/2 inches wide; 72.39 cm tall X 222.25 cm wide. All measurements are approximate.
Condition: Some use wear. Some water damage in spots and loosening of paper.
Provenance: From a private Californian collection.
