A Japanese Two Panel Folding Screen of Bears

Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century, ink, colors and gilt on paper, two panel folding screen byobu, featuring a family of bears, mother together with her two cubs, on the left side of the screen, and to the right hand side of the screen is a pine branch at top right above snow covered bamboo, there are scattered gold flecks over sections of both panels, signed to lower right corner Hirohiko together with red artist's seal, brocade border, lacquered wood frame having metal mountings with incised decoration to left and right sides.

Purchased by consignor at Marshall Field & Company on February 21, 1981.

Condition
Overall good estate condition; some losses to paper at center fold and on right and left edge; repair to right and left hand side at about same spot; some surface scratches; appears to be have been remounted in 1956.
