Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A lovely pair of two hand-carved stone heads from the ancient Mezcala culture. First is a mottled greenstone head with a pronounced mouth, a bulbous triangular nose, large eyes, and a furrowed brow. The concave verso displays traces of applied red cinnabar adornments. The larger head exhibits more abstract features such as a bar-shaped nose and tab-shaped ears, and a biconically-drilled suspension hole behind the back of the head suggests its use as a wearable pendant. Size: 3.4" W x 3.7" H (8.6 cm x 9.4 cm)
Provenance: Mark Poolos collection, Illinois, USA; ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970

Condition
Both heads have minor abrasions and nicks, softening to some finer details, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
