Southeast Asia, Philippines, Luzon Island, Ifugao, 19th century. A masterfully carved wooden ceremonial spoon (pakko) presenting a figural handle in the form of a seated male with crossed arms resting upon raised knees, looking out with a peaceful expression, his features - including ovoid eyes, a pronounced nose, an unsmiling mouth, tab-shaped ears, and a sharp jawline - all beautifully rendered. Atop the figure's head is an integral loop for suspending the spoon, and the lower section possesses an ample scoop. A lovely example with a lustrous patina. Size: 8.375" H (21.3 cm); 8.375" H (21.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Ami Brown collection, New York City, USA, 1950 to 1970

Only minor surface wear with minute, nearly invisible, scuffs and nicks to the peripheries and high pointed areas. Minute stable fissures to arms. Otherwise intact and excellent.
