Title: Ten photographs of five different maps of showing topography and defenses for the planned amphibious landing at Anzio
Place Published: No place
Publisher:
Date Published: Dec. 11, 1943
Description:
Photographic copies of five different maps (two of each), originals were pen and ink. Stapled together with colored pencil cover sheet. 25.5x34 cm (10x13?").
Rare series of maps, marked "Secret", showing the coastline targeted for assault in what was hoped to be a decisive battle in the conquest of Italy by the Allies in World War II. Brilliant in its conception, and initially successful in execution with the landing on January 22, 1944, the attempt to outflank the Germans bogged down due to an overabundance of caution on the part of American General John P. Lucas. The maps show the plans for the assault and breakthrough, including beaches marked Blue Beach, Blue (North), Red Beach, and Green Beach - Star Assault Beach, as well as the port of Anzio. On the cover sheet is written: "Strategic Intelligence Section, Military [Intelligence] Division, Office Chief of Engineers. Beach (Pen and Ink) Sketches. Defence Information (By 5th Army PRV) as of Dec. 11, 1943." There is a bold but indecipherable signature in pencil.
