Description
Late 17th/early 18th century handwrought and cast silver and silver gilt Communion cup, possibly Spanish Colonial, in four parts. Each part is affixed with a long silver threaded rod from the cup, through the shaft, and secured under the base with a threaded nut. The flaring cup is deep and, in its size, more in keeping with a liturgical object than a secular drinking cup. The outer top half of the cup is parcel gilt as is its interior; another sign that its contents should remain as pure as possible. The multi-ring ornamental baluster shaft is cast in one solid piece. The base is handwrought and with a separate handwrought spacer above. Repairs and dent, as to be expected in a piece of this age. 8''h, 5-1/8''dia. Total approximate weight 15.1 troy oz. Provenance: Kinzle Galleries, Duncansville, PA, 1969.
