Description
If you are a fan of the painted backdrops Civil War photographers were fond of featuring in their artistry, look no further. In this quarter plate tintype the photographer posed the subject, a weary-looking Union Sergeant, close to the camera and to the extreme left of the photo to maximize the visibility of the camp-themed backdrop behind him. This creative choice is highly unique in civil war photography. The subject is unknown but the backdrop is associated with the Pennsylvania reserves, an infantry division known for famous commanders and high casualties in the eastern theater, including Gettysburg. More research may reveal a compelling identification. Condition is near mint. Uncased.
