Description
Original edition of the "Charleston Courier" dated June 15, 1807. Advertisements fill the front page of the newspaper, some of which offer a handsome reward for "runaway" slaves, complete with an icon of a slave running away.
One of these ads states "Runaway on the 27th, The subscriber's servant, William, about 25 years of age, 5 ft 8 in high, marked with the smallpox. He carried with him two cloth coates , one blue and the other brown, a pair of black velvet, and a pair of mixed cashmere pantaloons. When he is spoken to he has a down look. He is well-known, being much employed about the city in playing the tambourine. A reward of $50 will be paid on proof to his being harbored by a white person, and $10, on his being secured in the workhouse. -Archibald Pagan"
