ca. 100–300 AD. Roman. A solid silver ring with a circular hoop and a carnelian gem intaglio depicting a satyr in profile. Satyrs were companion of the ancient Greek god Dionysus (the Romans 'Bacchus'), the god of wine, fertility, ritual madness, theater, and religious ecstasy.
