Item Details
Description
North America, United States, West Virginia, Harper’s Ferry, ca. 1832 CE. A fine percussion M1816 musket with a steel barrel and wooden stock produced at the famous Harpers Ferry arsenal. The barrel and stock are a warm chocolate color with a rich patina. Only 350,000 Model 1816 muskets were manufactured at the arsenal at Harper's Ferry. The lockplate is stamped with the maker’s mark of an eagle above “US” and behind the hammer is “Harpers Ferry 1832" and the buttcap and barrel have additional standard markings. The original flintlock has been converted using the Belgian Style Alteration, also known as a "cone type." Most of the M1816's were converted in the 1840s through the American Civil War. A golden brass piece and fillings were added during the conversion to the lock plate. A great and historic rifle that may have seen service during the Mexican-American and Civil Wars. Size: 57.25" L x 4.25" W (145.4 cm x 10.8 cm)

Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection, purchased in January 2021; ex-Keven Hiebert collection, Newton, Kansas, USA
