Bodmer, Prince Maximilian and David Dreidoppel were heading up the Missouri River aboard the steamer Yellow Stone. On 5 May they had left Cabanné's post for the abandoned military post of Fort Atkinson in the vicinity of present day Fort Calhoun, Nebraska On the morning of 7 May 1833 they passed the spot pictured here by Bodmer: the Blackbird Hills, named after a chief of the Omahas who had insisted on being buried in a mound seated upon a mule. As the boat passed by three Indians look on warily, two keep guard on the bank whilst a third waters his horse.
